Pair of Japanese Satsuma-ware vases, late 19th century
Satsuma ceramics became highly desirable import goods from Japan when the 19th century developed a fascination for exotic countries and their influences on our interiors. This well preserved pair is hand decorated with dreamy scenes featuring geishas, scholars and musicians in great detail as well as flowers, landscapes and traditional Japanese patterns. All arranged on a rich Ponceau-red glaze. Around 1880.
