Neoclassical French bureau, ca. 1780
A fine 18th century Neoclassical French drawing room bureau in fabulously authentic condition. In typical fashion of the 18th century drawing room, this piece was made to sit within the room rather than against a wall, and so the four sides are meant to be seen. Rosewood and mahogany veneers have become a warm mellow tone with the centuries. Contrast inlay work forms the typical plaited pattern of the Louis Seize style. Gilt bronze detailing in outstanding quality to the drawer fronts, key holes, top gallery, the legs and the apron. On the pull-out writing surface the original leather has been preseved . Three small drawers at level with the desk top, and one large drawer (disguised as two drawers) beneath. Compartmented interior, charmingly ink stained.
