A Library Scene in 1800
Our large scale reprint of a French engraving from around the year 1800, showing a scene from domestic life in a country house. In a library two boys practise their spelling with their mother or governess who is dressed ‘A la Grècque’, a fashion imitating the dress of women in Ancient Greece. The composition itself appears to be borrowed from Antiquity, when such groups figured on vases and frescoes.
