Convent above Lake Locarno
Our large scale fine art reprint of a Swiss landscape by William Henry Bartlett, British artist and traveller, who became renowned for documenting geographic settings. Bartlett travelled to Switzerland in 1836 and captured many hauntingly beautiful panoramas across lakes and mountain peaks, with monasteries, villages and castle ruins in the foreground. As an artist of his century he wanted to show the sites in all their wild, rugged beauty. In the Romantic Era, mountainous sceneries were all the rage and the Alps had become a fascinating travel destination after having been previously more or less ignored on the way to Italy.
