Sir Joshua Reynolds
Our fine art reprint of an original copperplate engraving dated 1783, showing celebrity portraitist Sir Joshua Reynolds in his heyday. Reynolds made a name for himself in portrait painting of a new genre and therefore became extremely popular with the rich and famous. He was the founder of The Club, where from 1764 onwards he brought together aristocrats, writers and publishers every week in the manner of an 18th century Salon Littéraire. The Club had to move premises in 1783, so it is likely that at this moment Reynolds’ portrait was published in a periodical magazine alongside an article.
