... A Rome
Our large scale fine art reprint of an original 18th century text from a French volume on the Italian architect Giacomo da Vignola. A Mannerist in the late years of the Italian Renaissance, Vignola is mostly being remembered for two surviving buildings: the Chiesa del Gesù in Rome, the mother church of the Jesuite order, funded by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, and the Villa Farnese in Caprarola - undoubtedly Vignola’s masterpiece. Works on Italian architecture were written and illustrated for those who could not afford to travel to Rome to study the sites, or for those who wanted to remember them and use them for their own professional designs.
